The NZSO brings a programme of popular delights for the opening night of the Festival. Under the baton of NZSO Associate Conductor Hamish McKeich, this Classical Hits concert is designed for the whole family.
Andrew Joyce, the NZSO’s Principal Cellist, will perform Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary cello masterpiece Variations on a Rococo Theme.
Turanga-nui by Dunedin taonga Dame Gillian Whitehead features in the programme. Commissioned by the NZSO to commemorate next year’s 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s landfall in New Zealand, Turanga-nui will have its Dunedin première at this Festival concert.
Other favourites in the programme are the Unfinished Symphony by Schubert, Debussy’s Prelude à l’après-midi d’un faune and the ever-popular Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky.
This NZSO concert will provide an elegant, accessible and joyful gala, as we launch Festival number ten.
