Take three former members of the NZSO, a top New Zealand composer and Arts Laureate, and a shared passion for Klezmer music – and you have The Kugels.

Klezmer is the folk music of Jewish people from Eastern and Central Europe and is currently enjoying a worldwide rebirth of interest and popularity.

The Festival last programmed a klezmer band back in 2002 – so it’s high time that this infectious music was heard again, in our Tenth Anniversary Season.

The Kugels hails from Wellington and is made up of Debbie Rawson, clarinet, Robin Perks, violin, Jacqueline Nordon, bass, and Ross Harris, accordion. With passion and sensitivity, The Kugels play not only the wild and haunting tunes of traditional klezmer, but also evocative original works by NZ composer Ross Harris. The Kugels’ concert at The Savoy will be a great night.
